Algeria visa news: arrival visa renewed, new fees proposed

Algeria has renewed its visa-on-arrival scheme for foreign tourists heading to the Sahara for the 2026-2027 season, and a draft finance bill published this autumn would change what the visa costs. The latest Algeria visa news for travellers is based on reports from Algérie360, Maghreb Émergent and TSA Algérie, read at the time of writing (3 November 2026). Several points are confirmed rules, while others are only proposals that parliament has yet to adopt.

Algeria visa news: the arrival visa returns for the 2026-2027 season

According to Algérie360, which reported on 28 September 2026, Algeria is renewing its arrival visa for tourists visiting the south through an accredited Algerian travel agency. The scheme covers 24 wilayas, from the Grand Sud around Tamanrasset, Djanet and Illizi to Ghardaïa, Biskra, El Oued and Laghouat. The same outlet notes that the programme booked with the agency must include at least one of these wilayas.

Maghreb Émergent reported that the visa was introduced in 2023 by a decision of the president. The visa is valid for the length of the organised trip, up to a maximum of 30 days. Algérie360 adds that conditions can change from one season to the next, and it advises travellers to confirm them with an accredited agency or an Algerian consulate before booking.

Algeria visa news: what the figures say about demand

On Monday 20 July 2026, Tourism and Crafts Minister Houria Meddahi chaired a coordination meeting on the scheme. According to the ministry statement carried by Maghreb Émergent, nearly 39,000 foreign tourists of 120 nationalities have used the arrival visa since its launch. The ministry presents this as growth, although the report gives no breakdown by nationality, wilaya or period.

Algérie360 added regional numbers. It reported that the southern wilayas received about 750,000 tourists in 2025, of whom about 65,000 were foreign, and that the 2025-2026 season from October to April drew about 470,000 visitors, about 47,000 of them foreign. The same article counts 258 hotels with 20,000 beds in the region and says 21 new projects are due in 2026.

How the arrival visa works, step by step

The process is organised around the travel agency, not the individual traveller. Based on the Algérie360 reports of 28 September and 20 October 2026, the steps are as follows.

  • The traveller books a programme with an accredited agency, approved by the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts, that includes at least one eligible southern wilaya.
  • The traveller gives the agency a passport copy, the programme and the application form. The agency enters the request on the ministry's digital platform.
  • After validation, the agency issues a boarding authorisation with a QR code, which is shown to the airline.
  • On arrival, border police issue the visa, and the traveller pays the stamp duty by receipt or by fiscal stamps.

Algérie360 lists a passport valid for at least six months from the entry date among the required documents. It also stresses that solo travellers who do not book through an agency, as well as family, business and diaspora visits, still follow the ordinary consular route. A stay limited to Algiers, Oran or Constantine without a southern circuit also needs a consular visa, according to the 20 October report.

Algeria visa news: proposed tariffs in the 2027 finance bill

The most concrete development is financial. Algérie360 reported on 10 October 2026 that Article 38 of the draft finance bill for 2027 would replace the current five fee brackets for the arrival visa with three. Under the draft, a stay of 1 to 7 days would cost 10,000 DA, 8 to 15 days would cost 15,000 DA, and 16 to 30 days would cost 20,000 DA.

The current scale comes from Article 48 of the 2025 Finance Law, published on 26 December 2024. According to Algérie360, it sets 5,000 DA for 1 to 2 days, 10,000 DA for 3 to 7 days, 20,000 DA for 8 to 10 days, 25,000 DA for 11 to 15 days and 50,000 DA for 16 to 30 days. Compared with that scale, the proposal would cut the fee for the longest stays from 50,000 to 20,000 DA, but it would raise the fee for 1 to 2 days from 5,000 to 10,000 DA.

Algérie360 itself cautions that it would be inexact to call the reform a general price cut, because the main beneficiaries would be stays longer than one week. These amounts are stamp duties for the visa only. Flights, hotels, local transport and agency services are separate. The text is a draft and takes effect only if parliament adopts it, so travellers should rely on the rates in force when they book.

Algeria visa news: e-visa plans remain on the table

Travellers often ask about a fully online visa. TSA Algérie reported on 16 November 2024 that Tourism Minister Mokhtar Didouche said his ministry was considering an electronic visa for tourists to the Sahara, with no launch date and no details on how it would work. Earlier, in February 2020, German media reported that then Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad had announced an e-visa plan, which did not lead to a general online system.

In April 2026, with an update in July, the travel blog Algérie Nomades wrote that Algeria does not yet offer a fully electronic visa to French citizens and that consulates still use a largely paper-based procedure with an online appointment. A German visa service, buch-dein-visum.de, also describes the Algerian tourist visa as an application at an embassy or consulate and lists no electronic option. None of the pages read for this report describes a launched e-visa, but that may change, so check before booking.

What this means for German and other European travellers

For travellers from Germany and the rest of Europe, the practical picture splits into two routes. The first is the agency route for the south. The second is the consular visa for everything else. The service buch-dein-visum.de states that Germans need a visa, that no visa is issued on arrival for ordinary travel, and that the application goes to the Algerian embassy in Berlin or the consulate general in Frankfurt am Main at least two weeks before entry. The same page gives a typical processing time of about 15 working days, a single-entry visa for up to 30 days and validity of 90 days from issue. It carries no update date, so these details are best confirmed with the mission.

The tour operator Against the Compass, in a guide updated on 28 October 2026, describes a letter of invitation from a registered local operator as the key document for the arrival visa and says desert operators in Djanet and Tamanrasset may issue one for the wider trip. It also quotes euro prices as of January 2026, which differ from the dinar scale above, so the amount to be paid on arrival should be confirmed in writing. It reports an airport wait of one to three hours for the stamp.

This section is general context rather than reported fact. Allow generous time for the document stage, keep the passport validity above six months, and ask the agency to state the visa duration and the entry airport in writing. Because the draft 2027 scale could change prices for short and long stays alike, it may be worth asking whether any fee change affects a trip booked now.

What to watch next

Three things are worth following in the coming Algeria visa news. First, whether parliament adopts Article 38 of the 2027 finance bill and from what date the new fees would apply. Second, whether the ministry carries out the measures it announced in July, namely monthly evaluation reports with agencies, a unified form for collecting tourist data, training sessions and a national meeting with all inbound travel agencies. Third, whether the e-visa idea moves from discussion to an official launch. At the time of writing (3 November 2026), none of these has been reported as completed.
